Windows Disk Defragmenter gets the stress test

Don't expect any test results for a few days, because this is what the Windows XP Disk Defragmenter (WDD) is having to deal with: 75% full hard drive with a lot of fragmented files, both large and small, including big compressed files with lots of fragments.
The test PC has been set up to look like a home PC that hasn't seen a defrag in its life before. This isn't too far off the mark. Since WDD is supplied with WinXP, it gets to go first. Then I will move on to Vista's built-in defrag utility, and take a peek at the Windows 7 version.
There is no time limit on how long the defrag will run. The goal is better performance, since most people leave the defrag running overnight or when they are out.
Update Sunday 1 March: As I start noting the results of the benchmarks, I have coined the term "the slouch factor" to describe what happens when a hard drive gets full. We've all noticed how a Windows machine usually feels slower after a long time of use, and as the drive gets full. There is an explanation for this, best described by Robert Ferraro of DiskTrix, in the "Hard Drive Performance Theory" section of the UltimateDefrag help file.
You can see it in the graph above: data transfer rates drop from 76MB/sec down to around 40MB/sec as you move from the start of the drive to the end. When I ran my previous Defrag Shootout, I was using a drive that had two partitions, courtesy of Acer. The first (and therefore faster) partition had the OS and temporary file space, while the second had data files. It seems that Acer was being clever by doing this, because the slouch factor is caused by the position of working (or temporary) files. When there is free space near the start of the drive, the temporary files can be manipulated there, with faster seek times and data transfer rates.
As the drive fills up and is kept "tidy" by a traditional defrag program like WDD, the position of the available free space gradually moves towards the slow end of the drive, affecting the seek time and transfer rates of new and temporary files. The computer starts to slouch, hence the slouch factor.

Boot Time Defragmentation

Boot time defrag capabilities have been around for years, but as Windows becomes more complex and file security gets tighter, boot time defrag becomes more useful. The defrag is done while your PC boots up (i.e. at boot time) before all the windows services get loaded, i.e. when the minimal number of files are being used.
My first recollection of a boot time defrag was in an early version of Diskeeper, sometime around 2000. When I bought PerfectDisk 7 it had a better boot time defrag, that sorted out the metadata files that you can't access once the OS is running. PerfectDisk 8 and 2008 also have this feature.
Then there is PageDefrag from Sysinternals, that defrags the registry, hibernation and page files, when it can. I haven't had much success using this on Windows Vista. Not surprising, since it was published in November 2006.
Then there is the freeware UltraDefrag, which can do a much more general job of defragmenting all kinds of files at boot time. I have had great success with this on Windows 2000 servers, as well as workstations. It doesn't manage to defrag the MFT though, but this feature is on a future "things to do" list. I have stopped using UltraDefrag for any other kind of defragmentation, because I don't like the user interface, but it's brilliant for boot time defrag. I have installed it on a few servers so that it can have a go at tidying things up when none of the server's services are running.
UltimateDefrag 2008 has finally released its own boot time defrag module, and claims
"The UltimateDefrag 2008 boot time/system file defrag module is a world first in what it enables you to be able to do when it comes to defragging and moving system files to areas on your drive that further enhance performance."
I have downloaded the new version and plan on running some tests to see how it works. It's a free upgrade for existing UD2008 owners, and until the end of the year the usual price of US$ 39.95 has been reduced to $29.96 for new customers.
The Best So Far
Last, but not least, is my current favourite defrag program, Puran Defrag 5.1. It has the best of both worlds: automatic defrag that you can set to run every now and then, and boot time defrag, which I have set to run the first time I boot up on a Wednesday. The review of this program has been ready for some time, but thanks to my legal hassles it has been delayed. The photo of my laptop screen at the top of this article shows PuranDefrag at work. It is currently selling for US$19.95, which is excellent value for a general purpose simple to use defrag utility.

Update 16 Dec 2008: See KB312067: "Shadow copies may be lost when you defragment a volume". It seems that the Shadow Copy service doesn't work terribly well on drives where defragmenting is being done. This affects any kind of defrag, not just at boot time.

Defrag Democracy and other Developments

In an effort to find out which defrag programs are the most popular, the web site makeuseof.com has started a defrag utility poll. Many of the well known defrag products are listed, but not all. At the last view, it turns out that over a third of the respondents use the built-in Windows Disk Defragmenter in reponse to the question "what program do you use to defragment your PC?".
I am still testing the new Ultimate Defrag 2008, and am pleased to report that the older version of Ultimate Defrag 1.72 is now available as freeware.
Another development is the imminent arrival of Puran Defrag 5.0, which is looking awesome, with a cool new interface and some pretty nifty features, especially in the boot time defrag category. I expect to report more on this product soon.

UltimateDefrag Announces Freeware and Special Offer

After announcing the new UltimateDefrag 2008 product, Disktrix also announced a freeware version 1.72 (with no technical support), as well as special offer: $10 saving until the end of June on the purchase of the new version 2008, which normally costs $39.95.
I will be publishing benchmarks and a review of version 2008 sometime soon, and the older version was reviewed a year ago, with a "thumbs up", especially for performance junkies. Disktrix have also announced improved boot time support, to be released shortly.

UltimateDefrag 2008 Debate: I

Regular readers of this blog already know that I had an unfortunate spat with DiskTrix over their marketing emails. Since it was a genuine mistake I have removed the article. In the meantime I have had an interesting conversation with Robert Ferraro about UltimateDefrag, file placement, benchmarks and the like. I will include some extracts here, and hope to add some more soon. He writes:

"On a 500 Gb drive with 348 Gb and 405,001 files this is the result of my analyze:

"We analyze a drive 432% faster than defraggler or in other words in 23% of the time – less than a quarter. When you minimize our display – we actually analyze that same drive in 33 seconds.
"I can assure you that with 3 years of perfecting our analysis routine – it’s as overhead free as you could get by all coding standards.
"Please note also that with UltimateDefrag – Fragmented Files Only (FFO) …. We can get you from program start to completely defragged much faster than Defraggler since we save all that time on analysis and you don’t need to select files manually. Of course one feature of UltimateDefrag is that we can defrag individual files or just all files in a folder for that matter. So while we have all of our advanced features – the most simple of all defrags – Fragmented Files Only – is there too.

In fairness to Defraggler, it is the quickest utility currently installed on my laptop, and I only have two 30GB partitions. I have noticed that it is slower on other drives. However my experience of UltimateDefrag 1.52 in June last year was not good: it took over 14 minutes to analyse my drive, because there was a large (>4GB) compressed file on the drive. I wrote to Robert about this, and was told to try various options, but he was unwilling to admit that this might be a problem. I plan to do some tests to see if the problem has been fixed.

Update: I obtained a license for UltimateDefrag 2008, and tried a quick test (see comment #1) on my Iomega 500GB external USB drive: I timed the "analyse" times (I ran each one twice, and used the second result) for the defrag programs currently installed on my laptop:

UltraDefrag gave an error, and PuranDefrag doesn't have a separate "Analyse" option.
Column "A" refers to the analyse times (in seconds) of the drive with a several large files, including a 9GB data file. Column "B" refer to the analyse times with the same files, but an additional copy of the 9GB data file, this time stored as a compressed file, containing 123235 fragments.
This confirms the behaviour mentioned in the UD1.52 review, but not nearly as bad as before: 3 minutes compared to 14 minutes.

Update 2: I noticed during the tests above that some programs took longer to load than others, so I did some timing (see comment 1).

These numbers are not particularly scientific, since it isn't easy to measure with any degree of accuracy, but it does confirm my feeling that UD2008 and PD2008 are larger, slower apps than the other smaller ones listed. Bigger is not always better.

Update 3: Rob (see comments) asked me to do the fragmented file test on my laptop drive. I couldn't manage the 9GB file because of space limitations, but did manage to create a 6GB file that was compressed, with 476,192 fragments. My timing results (not scientific) are shown here:

This is not a typo: UD2008 took nearly 22 minutes to analyse the drive. It takes 20 seconds to load the program on my machine, partly because it takes time to draw a picture of the drive.
As soon as I deleted the 6GB file, UD2008's load time dropped to 8 seconds, and the analyse speed dropped to 18 seconds.

Benchmarks*: Disktrix UltimateDefrag 1.72

I have reviewed a previous version of UltimateDefrag 1.72, and posted the results of testing here. This has been the most complex of all the products to benchmark, because of the bewildering array of file placement options. The results show a representative cross-section of these options, using default values wherever possible. I have no explanation why the basic WDD results are faster, but these are still raw results.
The graph shows UltimateDefrag 1.72 (UD) in dark blue, and the results from Windows XP in light blue. The first test is at the bottom, and shorter lines mean faster times. The magenta lines are the results obtained using each of the main file placement options.
  • "Basic XP" refers to the standard install, without Office 2007, so there are only 710 files to be tested.
  • "Defrag Only" refers to the read times of the same 710 files, after two defrag passes using the UD "defragment only" option, with no "Optimize Files" or "Optimize Boot" options enabled. A 17.3% performance improvement is measured.
  • "Consolidate" refers to the UD "Consolidate" option, which returned a 3.1% performance improvement.
  • "File Sort" refers to the UD "File/Folder" option, which returned a 15.1% performance improvement.
  • "Recency" refers to the UD "Recency" (Date Modified) option, which returned a 13.9% performance improvement.
  • "Volatility" refers to the UD "Volatility" option, which returned a 11.5% performance improvement.
  • "Auto" refers to the UD "Auto" option, which returned a 16.7% performance improvement.
  • "Auto+Layout.ini" refers to the read time after enabling both the "Optimize Boot" function in Windows, and then running UD Auto with "respect Layout.ini" enabled. An improvement of 9.1% is recorded, still slower than WDD.
  • "XP+Auto" is the result obtained after enabling both "Optimize Files" and "Optimize Boot" functions in Windows, and then running WDD, i.e. the best that Windows XP can manage.
  • "Basic Office" refers to the read time of all 802 test files, where no defragmentation has been done whatsoever, after the installation of Microsoft Office 2007 Professional (Trial).
  • "Full Defrag Only" refers to the read times of the same 802 files, after two defrag passes using the UD "defragment only" option, with no "Optimize Files" or "Optimize Boot" options enabled. A 13.6% performance improvement is measured.
  • "Consolidate" refers to the UD "Consolidate" option, which returned a 18.3% performance improvement.
  • "File Sort" refers to the UD "File/Folder" option, which returned a 16.5% performance improvement.
  • "Recent Access" refers to the UD "Recency" (Date Last Accessed) option, which returned a 21.1% performance improvement.
  • "Recent Modified" refers to the UD "Recency" (Date Modified) option, which returned a 22.7% performance improvement.
  • "Recent Created" refers to the UD "Recency" (Date Created) option, which returned a 16.6% performance improvement.
  • "Volatility" refers to the UD "Volatility" option, which returned a 23.2% performance improvement.
  • "Auto" refers to the UD "Auto" option, which returned a 20.1% performance improvement.
  • "Auto+Layout.ini" refers to the read time after enabling both the "Optimize Boot" function in Windows, and then running UD Auto with "respect Layout.ini" enabled. An improvement of 21.0% is recorded, still slower than WDD.
  • "Office Auto" is the result obtained by allowing Windows XP to do its own defrag after enabling both "Optimize Files" and "Optimize Boot" functions.
The performance improvement ranges between 3% and 23%, with no noticeable improvement when the layout.ini information is used.
An average 16.2% performance improvement over no defrag at all is a little disappointing for a $39.95 commercial package, lagging behind the other "heavy hitter" commercial programs. Still, dedicated performance junkies can tweak the myriad options to their hearts content until they get the results they desire.
The image here is for the second "Volatility" option. Notice how the file placement is completely different to the "Auto" option at the top of the article.
The next package to be tested is Puran Defrag 4.0, which has just been released.

The Mysteries of Defrag Testing

I have spent several days testing various defrag programs, and I'm now completely baffled by the results. (Shorter times are better.) I'm not surprised that PerfectDisk 8, Puran Defrag 3, and JkDefrag 3 all produced better results than a fragmented installation of Windows XP. What is baffling is why the other programs do worse, particularly Diskeeper and UltimateDefrag.
I have done my best to correct the results. I took measurements of 655 files, and then discarded all but 483 of them, because the numbers were too low in at least one set of results, implying that the file was being read from cache RAM, not the hard drive. What I don't understand is why the final WDD result would be so different from the first one. The "raw" data is shown below.
Clearly something else is changing. I did not do a complete Windows reinstall after each test, because of the problems with getting a sector-based backup to work. Perhaps that has something to do with it. The UltimateDefrag (UD) result was obtained using its "Auto" setting, and I'm sure that further experimentation with the other options will give a more realistic result.
Part of the problem could be that programs like Diskeeper and UD move "old" files to the slower part of the drive. Since the oldest files on the drive include a lot of WinXP system files, this may not be such a great idea. PerfectDisk puts newer files at the end, which would include new WinXP patches, but I haven't checked. It "knows" which files are used at startup, so this may account for a better performance than DK and UD. Perhaps I'll include the file dates in my next round of testing. In the meantime, I wouldn't give these results too much significance.
Update: I have found a replacement hard drive without sector errors, and installed Windows XP again. Tests are beginning with an updated version of the "Prefetch File Processor" program that will note the file creation date as well. I will run tests on most of the programs reviewed in this blog, and publish them as the results become available.

The Great Defrag Shootout XIII: DiskTrix UltimateDefrag 1.52

UltimateDefrag is probably the closest program yet reviewed to being the "ultimate" defrag software, particularly if you're a power user. It gets a "Thumbs Up" rating in spite of its flaws.
The first good thing about UD is the manual. It's a well-written PDF file that explains a lot about hard drives, how they work, and how defragmentation can improve the performace and responsiveness of the drive.
Another good thing is that it's easy to install, and fairly intuitive to use. When you do the trail download you supply your email address, and over the next week or so you get 5 short tutorial emails explaining how to get started and use UD to it full potential.
It doesn't do any "on-the-fly" defragmenting, but you can schedule it to run when the PC isn't busy (almost the same as a screen saver option), or at pre-defined times. It also has a boot-time option to defrag system files, and it respects the information in the "layout.ini" file.
The speed of a hard drive varies from the "outside" to the "inside" of the drive, and UD has numerous options and techniques to capitalise on this fact. You can "archive" files or file types by relocating them to slower areas of the disk, and prioritise other files or folders by moving them to the faster areas of the disk.
So with a bit of tweaking you can improve the layout of the hard drive and make performance gains in the process. Of course you could also make bad choices and slow things down, and so there are numerous automatic and recommended settings that assist. What I don't understand is why a lot of the recommended options aren't already checked, or even marked with an asterisk or something.
Another good idea is to move the directories close to the Master File Table (MFT) because they are often used together anyway. I haven't seen any other programs do this.
The on-screen display of the hard drive as a circular disk is unique, but not always entirely helpful. You can change the granularity of the display by adjusting the "zoom" settings. You can also set limits on the maximum % resources used, although it doesn't always honour them. There is a colour for files being moved, but it only shows where they are being moved from, not the new location, so if you are watching the way UD works, you are often still in the dark as to what is going on. Usually the current file name is displayed at the bottom of the screen, but not always, yet the program seems to be busy anyway.
For the first few days I allowed UD to operate on its "AUTO" setting, to get a feel for how the program would improve my drive without much user intervention. The results were OK. If that's all you need then UltimateDefrag Lite (US$11.97) will save you some money, but in my opinion it's too crippled, because it offers no boot-time defrag, something that is still important over the long term.
The optimisation strategy relies on the "last accessed date" of files. This is theoretically fine, except that compressing a file changes its last accessed date, and I found that the entire "media" directory and subdirectories from OfficeXP, consisting mostly of clipart that don't use, was moved to the faster area of the disk. I guess I could use filetouch.exe or something to change this, but it was a bit disappointing. I guess Microsoft broke its own rules.
You can override these settings by specifying files or file types to treat as high performance or archive types. I found the interface at this point somewhat clunky. Certain common extension types are left out, such as mp3 (although mp1, mp2 and mp4 are listed), and you can't jump to a particular extension such as exe or rar easily. I found it quicket to click on "Custom" and type in the file type, and then scroll to the bottom of the list to find my custom entry. Since this is such an important part of the optimisation process, I would have expected these options to be pre-filled with common extensions to be treated as high performance (exe, sys, dll) and archive (zip, cab, rar) by default. It would also be nice to be able to copy settings from drive C: to D:.
Unfortunately I will not be using UD because it failed my "torture test" and my "large files" test. It chokes on big files. The moment I created my two large SQL data files on drive C:, the analyse time went from a few seconds to 14 minutes. When I decompressed these files to their full size and then requested a defrag, it failed, or at least didn't do anything to defrag the file. I should point out that WDD failed to defrag them either, and contig.exe complained about not enough free disk space. But a US$39.95 program should be able to defrag any file that isn't locked, IMHO.
I re-compressed the file and used contig to defragment it again. Then I left my laptop running on the "Consolidate" option overnight. After 12 hours it hadn't finished and the drive looked in a bit of a mess.
On my D: drive I have a 4GB file used by TrueCrypt, and when I asked for this file to be placed on the outside of the drive. After an hour or so it had moved the file, but the free disk space was disorganised. I changed a few settings in the file preferences, and a more thorough "consolidate" pass eventually sorted it out.
It seems to be a weakness that the MFT can land up anywhere on the drive and UD simply has to work around it somehow. I realise it could be difficult if not impossible to move the MFT, but this has to be considered when allocating free space and moving files around. I could find no mention that this is being done, and the drive diagrams appear to confirm this.
My overall impression is that this program is sluggish and vulnerable to giving up when large file are involved. If your files are all smaller than a few GB in size then I think this program will be a serious contender. Despite the good ideas and mostly good implementation, I can't rely on it for my needs. It's a pity, because this is a good product.

Update: Both UltimateDefrag and UltimateDefrag Lite require an opening in the Windows firewall, which has to be closed manually once the programs are uninstalled.
